“Good morning, everyone. For this closing ceremony for the 2020 school year, I’m going to talk about three things in English. So, please listen carefully.

No. 1. This school year, I believe that every one of you has been working hard every day in classes and at home. I am so proud of you. Soon, your homeroom teacher will give you your grade report. If you think that you have done well, congratulations. Keep working hard. If you think that your grade is not very good, please study harder and spend more time studying at home. Also, please ask your teachers more questions in order to keep up with your classmates. You should also work hard to not be late for the deadline of your homework. At any rate, whether your grade is good or not as good as you would like, I hope you will still work hard over the next school year.

No. 2. I want you to think about what is important for you to be able to enjoy your school life in the middle of these difficult times. There have been many things you could not try or many things you did not enjoy doing because of the corona virus pandemic over the past year. It was a pity that we couldn’t hold an athletic meet, the one-day school trip, or the chorus contest. But, the body percussion contest was a success, wasn’t it? So, for the next school year, you should try to start something new!

I would like to quote a phrase I used in my graduation ceremony speech which was held at Namikiri Hall about two weeks ago. It is a phrase by a German poet named Johann Wolfgang von Goethe regarding how important it is to start something new to be able to overcome difficult times. Goethe said, “Fresh activity is the only means of overcoming adversity.” Fresh means new, overcome means to win against something, and adversity means a difficult situation. If you apply this phrase to the current situation, you should start something new for you to be able to win against today’s COVID-19 pandemic. So, I want you to start something new and try a new activity with your own fresh ideas.

No. 3. Next month, new students will enter and become new members of our school. So, together with the fresh first year students, try to help make Izumi High School a better school for studying, a better community for enjoying your school life, and a better place for making your dreams come true. Try to keep your everyday school life safe and sound, and enjoy it. Keep wearing a mask and keep social distancing to stay healthy.

These are the three main things I want you to keep in mind for the next school year. No.1 – study hard, no. 2 – start something new, and no.3 – help make our school a better school together.

Thank you for listening to my speech. Have a nice spring vacation. See you in April.“
